Chrystia Freeland’s granddad was indeed a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator – so much for Russian disinformation
So what was the Krakivski Visti? It, like a number of publications, had been seized by the Nazis from their Jewish owners and then operated as propaganda outlets.
Here is what the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum has to say about Krakivski Visti and a similar newspaper, Lvivski Visti, both publications associated with the Nazi regime.
“The editorial boards carried out a policy of soliciting Ukrainian support for the German cause,” the Holocaust Museum noted. “It was typical, within these publications, to not to give any accounts of the German genocidal policy, and largely, the editions resorted to silencing the mass killing of Jews in Galicia. Ukrainian newspapers presented the Jewish Question in light of the official Nazi propaganda, corollary to the Jewish world conspiracy.”
“In 1943 and 1944, both Lvivski Visti and Krakivski Visti hailed the German-approved formation of the 14th Waffen SS Division Halychyna, composed of Ukrainian volunteers,” the museum pointed out.
So much for Russian disinformation.
On Wednesday the Globe and Mail reported that, “Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland knew for more than two decades that her maternal Ukrainian grandfather was the chief editor of a Nazi newspaper.” Continue reading

How Canada became a haven for Ukrainian Nazi collaborators…including Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland’s Grandfather Mikhail Chomiak
In the immediate postwar period, Canada’s then Liberal government, working in close cahoots with US and British intelligence, opened Canada’s doors to Ukrainian Nazi collaborators. These included members of the infamous 14th Grenadier Division of the Waffen SS, also known as the Galicia Division.
Among the beneficiaries of this policy was Mikhail Chomiak, the grandfather of current Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland. Chomiak served as editor of a pro-Nazi Ukrainian nationalist newspaper during the war, Krakivs ’ ki Visti, which used publishing equipment commandeered by the Nazis from a Jewish newspaper they had shut down. CANADA ‘dumping ground’ for former Nazis says Rodal Study – Pope Pius XII made direct appeal to accept a Nazi collaborator from Czechoslovakia, Karol Sidor | New York Times
The study’s conclusions appeared to tally with the United States Justice Department’s disclosure in 1983 that American intelligence agencies in Europe knowingly employed and protected former Nazis, including Klaus Barbie, the former Gastapo chief of Lyons, recently convicted of war crimes in a French court. The United States investigation showed that American officials assisted some of the former Nazis in acquiring new identities that made it possible for them to leave Europe and settle elsewhere, notably in South America….
Some of the censorship involved passages dealing with two former prime ministers, Louis St. Laurent and Pierre Trudeau.
Mr. St. Laurent is depicted as having agreed to the resettlement in Canada in 1949 of a Nazi collaborator from Czechoslovakia, Karol Sidor, after a direct appeal from Pope Pius XII. Mr. Sidor, previously commander in chief of the Hlinka Guard, a Slovakian stormtrooper unit, had been reassigned to the Vatican as the delegate of Nazi-occupied Slovakia. The study quotes a letter from the Apostolic delegate in Canada telling the Canadian authorities that Mr. Sidor ”cannot settle down anywhere in Europe without undergoing serious inconveniences and vexations.”
Mr. St. Laurent, who retired in 1957, was also depicted as having been ”personally involved” in communicating with purported Nazi war collaborators from Vichy France who settled in Quebec after being convicted in absentia in French courts. Mrs. Rodal said the St. Laurent Cabinet passed a special measure to allow four collaborators to remain in Canada as ”political refugees,” and that Mr. St. Laurent acted to persuade another man, Count Jacques de Bernonville, to flee Canada before he was deported to France. Getty appears to have been at the center of a shadowy group of financiers that provided support to Nazi Germany in the early days of World War II. The dossier says Getty sold one million barrels of oil to Germany. The fuel had to be delivered via Russia, a German ally at the time, because a British blockade was in place.
