Hagia sophia 2 interior mosaicRussian officials are demanding the return of the Hagia Sophia —  the majestic ancient Byzantine cathedral in Istanbul — as a show of good will in the aftermath of the downing of the Russian jet.

“We expect Turkey to take this friendly step – to return the Christian church Hagia Sophia. The Russian side is ready to help materially and to recruit the best Russian restorers and scientists to restore the church…

“This step would help Turkey and Islam to demonstrate that the good will is above politics.”

The church, which was built in 537 by Emperor Justinian, was converted into a Mosque following the Islamic conquest and occupation of Christian city of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453.

Constantinople was later renamed Istanbul.

SVETINJA Russians demand of Turkey “friendly gesture” – that Hagia Sophia is returned

Letter to the Russian State Duma supported the idea that the Orthodox Church returned Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, said the president of the Duma Committee on property issues, coordinator of inter-party parliamentary group for the protection of Christian values Sergei Gavrilov.

Gavrilov said that the Russian side considers it necessary to remind the oldest sanctity of the whole Christian world, St. Sophia of Constantinople in Turkey, in Istanbul, an ancient Byzantine church, whose history is linked with the history of the ecumenical council, Russian media reported.

“Očekujemo da Turska preduzme taj prijateljski korak – da vrati Aja Sofiju hrišćanskoj crkvi. Ruska strana je spremna da pomogne materijalno i da angažuje najbolje ruske restauratore i naučnike da restauriraju tu crkvu”, rekao je Gavrilov i dodao: “We expect Turkey to take this friendly step – to return the Christian church Hagia Sophia. The Russian side is ready to help materially and to recruit the best Russian restorers and scientists to restore the church,” Gavrilov said, adding:

“This step would help Turkey and Islam to demonstrate that the good will is above politics.”

Party CPFR has also said that now that the Russian-Turkish relations put to the test because of the overthrow of the Russian military plane by Turkish fighters two days ago, “mutual friendly initiatives and proposals are of particular importance.”
